As the snow falls I am thinking more and more about the Caribbean vacation I am missing this year! Instead I am working on the launch of my freelance business Executive Sales Support, so I have plenty to keep me busy right here at home.

You may have noticed that this newsletter is a bit late! In the months ahead you will notice other changes as I separate the two businesses.

Trend Spotting - Recent Statistics
So you have a business and you want to get the word out ... now what?

Seems like everywhere you look today people are starting their own business. There are as many options available to get your name out there as there are personalities.
If you are a great people person you may decide to go the route of an online radio show like Roaring Women Radio Show  or podcasting like Leesa Barnes .

A fairly easy way to start getting your name out there is with a newsletter published on a regular basis. It is a great way to let others know about your business. The key to success though is the word regular basis. It doesn't really matter how often you publish but it does matter that you do what you said you would! If you said it would be bi-monthly, than it is
bi-monthly. I choose to start with a newsletter because I wanted to have the opportunity to review the content before I committed it to publication!

To publish a newsletter and start communicating you'll need a list of names, called contacts. The list of names can be made up of prospects you meet or current clients. Start building your contact list by telling people that you will be publishing a newsletter and asking for their email address so they will be sure to get a copy. Many people offer a tip sheet as a way to offer value and get the ball rolling with a new prospect or contact. The idea is, you offer a sheet of valuable tips in exchange for their business card and then their name is a contact on your newsletter list. These two example are called opt in.

You can also build your list through networking events where everyone hands out business cards. I am sure you have received newsletters from some of the attendees at the last conference you attended. Although this method adds names to your list, the contacts may not have as much interest in your business. This reduces the impact of your efforts and your chance of actually doing business is diminished. The chances are higher that people who actually asked for your newsletter have an interest in your business and are more likely to do business with you. The difference is similar to buckshot spread out over a wide area and a laser focus.

Sending out a newsletter to a contact list is not quite the same as sending out an email to your friends. To ensure a professional look and feel it is a good idea to develop a template that you can use over and over. The template should include things like your contact information and an opt out so the people who would prefer not to receive future issues of your newsletter can opt out of your list. The template also ensures a consistent look and feel so people will get used to seeing it and begin to associate it with your name. This is the beginning of brand recognition.

Also you will need a service such as Constant Contact or Swiftpage to send out your newsletter to your list of contacts and manage your campaigns. I use Swiftpage because it interfaces with ACT, the contact management software I use and also MSOffice.
